The moment Frodo puts on the Ring at Weathertop and sees the Nazgûl as they truly are — this is the most terrifying paragraph Tolkien ever wrote. The visible world peels back and what's underneath is ancient and hungry. Every reread, this scene hits harder because you realize the Ring didn't protect Frodo.
