I really wanted to love this but I hit a wall around Tom Bombadil and couldn't get past it. The songs, the walking, the endless descriptions of trees — I know this is heresy but it just wasn't for me. I can absolutely see why people adore it. Maybe I'll try the audiobook someday.

No heresy here. Honest DNF reviews are more useful than forced five-star completions. Tom Bombadil is a genuine wall for a lot of readers and pretending otherwise does not help anyone.

Agreed, but I will still fight anyone who says Bombadil should have been cut. He is the whole thesis of the book in one character -- some things exist outside the logic of power.
